Position: Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Medical Technologist (MT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Description:

Performs various chemical, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and acts in a professional manner when performing these duties.  Performs duties as assigned on a rotational basis in all laboratory sub-departments including: chemistry, hematology, coagulation, blood bank. serology, and microbiology.

Obtains laboratory specimens from the medical/surgical floor, emergency department, birth center, clinics or nursing homes or directly from the patient, using established laboratory collection, venipuncture, capillary, and arterial techniques.  Performs routine phlebotomies.  Obtains specimens used in drug testing and paternity collections following established protocols.  Performs breath alcohol testing.  Works with all age groups.

Must be able to correlate and interpret test results prior to confirming, verifying and releasing test results.  This includes being able to recognize problems, troubleshoot, identify causes of errors and make any necessary adjustments or corrections.  Should be able to do any difficult differential smears and be proficient in bacteriologic smears.

Must be able to make up any normality or molarity solution needed from a stock solution.  Must set up standard curves for any given test, preparing proper dilutions from stock standards to be able to check the present curve as necessary.

Qualifications:

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)

Two years of college in an approved MLT program with courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, plus internship in an approved laboratory.  See personnel regulations policy for additional CLIA requirements.

Must be a registered ASCP certified Medical Technician.  If technologist is newly graduated from an approved school, board certification should be obtained within 6 months of hire.

 Medical Technologist (MT) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)

Three years of college or equivalent with courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, plus 1 year of training in a school of medical technology approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Must be a registered ASCP certified Medical Technologist.  If technologist is newly graduated from an approved school, board certification should be obtained within 6 months of hire.
